What learning looks like
In the early years (Nursery to PP2)
Young children learn through play, exploration and conversation. Guided by their teachers, they build early language and number skills, curiosity, confidence and the ability to work and play with others, through a small number of longer units of inquiry each year.
In Grades 1 and 2
Children develop reading, writing and mathematics while exploring the PYP’s six transdisciplinary themes. Subjects are connected through units of inquiry, so children learn to ask questions, find things out, and reflect on what they have learnt.
Teachers follow each child’s progress closely through observation, class work and portfolios, and share it with parents throughout the year. There are no external examinations in the PYP.
JGS Mokila: a planned IB journey from Nursery to Grade 12
JGS Mokila is Johnson Grammar School’s new campus on SARK Garden Villas Road, Mokila, Shankarpally, Hyderabad. We plan for it to offer all three IB programmes for school-age students, so that a child can move through one continuous IB education on one campus, from their first years at school to university entrance.
Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Planned for Nursery (EY1) to Grade 5
JGS intends to apply to the IB for PYP candidacy for JGS Mokila in 2027.
Middle Years Programme (MYP)
Planned to start with Grades 6 and 7, adding one grade each year up to Grade 10
JGS intends to apply to the IB for MYP candidacy for JGS Mokila in 2027.
Diploma Programme (DP)
Grades 11 and 12, planned from 2028–29
Subject to IB approval, JGS plans to move its Diploma Programme, run at JGS IBDP, Mallapur, since 2008, to JGS Mokila from 2028–29. Until then, the DP continues at Mallapur.
Please note: JGS Mokila is not yet an IB World School. Only schools authorised by the International Baccalaureate can offer IB programmes, and IB candidacy and authorisation are decided by the IB. We will keep families informed at each stage.
JGS Mokila also plans to offer the ICSE curriculum for Grades 1 to 7. Read about the ICSE at JGS Mokila.
Understanding the IB programmes
The International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational foundation, founded in Geneva in 1968. Its programmes for students aged 3 to 19 form a continuous journey, and all of them aim to develop curious, knowledgeable and caring young people.
Primary Years Programme (PYP): Nursery to Grade 5, ages 3 to 12
The PYP places the child at the centre of learning. Instead of studying every subject separately, children explore big ideas that connect language, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and personal, social and physical education. Learning is organised around six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organise ourselves
- How we share the planet
Children learn by asking questions, investigating and reflecting, and they are encouraged to have a voice and make choices in their learning. Progress is assessed continuously by teachers, with no external examinations. In the final year (Grade 5), students complete the PYP Exhibition, an extended inquiry into a real-world issue that they present to the school community.
Middle Years Programme (MYP): Grades 6 to 10, ages 11 to 16
The MYP bridges the PYP and the Diploma Programme. Students study eight subject groups:
- Language and literature
- Language acquisition
- Individuals and societies
- Sciences
- Mathematics
- Arts
- Physical and health education
- Design
Teaching is built around key concepts and real-world contexts, so students understand why what they learn matters. They take part in interdisciplinary learning and service as action. Students are assessed against clear, published criteria in every subject, so parents can see exactly what is expected. In the final year, students complete a Personal Project on a topic of their own choosing.
Diploma Programme (DP): Grades 11 and 12, ages 16 to 19
The DP is a rigorous two-year pre-university programme. Students study six subjects: one from each of studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences and mathematics, plus an arts subject or a second subject from one of those groups. Three or four subjects are taken at Higher Level and the rest at Standard Level.
Three core elements run through the programme: Theory of Knowledge, which asks students to reflect on how we know what we claim to know; the Extended Essay, an independent 4,000-word research paper; and Creativity, Activity, Service. Students sit examinations set and marked by the IB, alongside internal assessments moderated by the IB. The Diploma is scored out of 45 points and is recognised by universities in India and around the world.

The IB learner profile
Every IB programme aims to develop young people who are inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. These ten qualities shape how children learn and how they treat others, from Nursery to Grade 12.

47 years of Johnson Grammar School, nearly two decades of the IB
Johnson Grammar School has been educating Hyderabad’s children since 1979. Our IB journey began on 25 March 2008, when JGS IBDP, Mallapur, was authorised to offer the IB Diploma Programme. Since then, successive cohorts of Grade 11 and 12 students have completed the full Diploma, taught by IB-trained teachers on a dedicated DP floor, with the IB’s regular programme evaluation keeping our standards high.
On 10 April 2025, JGS Kokapet was authorised to offer the IB Primary Years Programme, bringing our IB experience to the early years. Our plans for JGS Mokila build on both.
