Where our story began: the ICSE at Johnson Grammar School since 1979

Johnson Grammar School was founded in Hyderabad in 1979, and the ICSE is where our story began. For 47 years, Johnson Grammar School’s ICSE classrooms, today at our Habsiguda and Mallapur campuses, have prepared generations of students for the ICSE and ISC examinations and for life beyond school. Our journey later grew to include the IB Diploma Programme in 2008 and the IB Primary Years Programme at JGS Kokapet in 2025.

JGS Mokila brings this experience, the same teaching standards and the same values to a new campus in west Hyderabad.

What is the ICSE?

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is a national school board established in 1958 and based in New Delhi. It conducts the ICSE examination at the end of Class 10 and the ISC examination at the end of Class 12, and its certificates are recognised across India.

The ICSE is known for:

  • A strong command of English, with English language and literature studied in depth.
  • Breadth and balance: languages, mathematics, sciences, humanities and the arts all carry weight.
  • Depth in each subject, through a clear, structured syllabus.
  • Learning by doing, through projects and practical work alongside written work.

The ICSE at JGS Mokila, grade by grade

Primary years: Grades 1 to 5

Children build strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, alongside environmental studies, languages, computer studies, art, music and physical education. Teaching is structured and hands-on, so children understand ideas and not only memorise them.

Middle years: Grades 6 and 7

Subjects become more specialised. Science is taught as physics, chemistry and biology, and history and civics and geography as separate subjects, alongside English, mathematics, languages and computer studies, laying the groundwork for the ICSE years ahead.

How progress is assessed

In Grades 1 to 7, students are assessed by the school through class work, projects and examinations, and progress is shared with parents throughout the year. There are no board examinations in these grades; the first CISCE board examination is the ICSE at the end of Class 10.
